Why Does Our Immune System Sometimes Fail?

As a microbiology major, I feel like I have learned countless facts about disease and how our bodies fight the myriad of microorganisms that make us ill.

And having studied immunology, I have a deep appreciation for our immune system's ability to fight off thousands of potential pathogens without causing even a slight fever or cough.  

With this insight in mind, I wondered how some bacteria, like S. aureus and N. meningititis can actually thrive in a person who has a fully functioning immune system - persisting until he/she spreads the disease to others...
