This is some of what we're up against: Figure 1: Neisseria family of bacteria. In addition to causing disease, they can also be normal inhabitants in our bodies. I've personally always thought it very amazing that these "simple" organisms have the ability to cause sickness or death in "complex" beings like ourselves. While modern science has developed a variety of antibiotics to fight these and other bacteria, why can't our immune system always do the job itself? The answer lies in genetics. |Home| |
